What We Do

Mining the essential commodities that power decarbonisation, global infrastructure, and sustainable food production.

Our Strategic Focus

BHP's operational portfolio is strategically designed around the commodities the world will need most in the decades ahead. As global populations grow, cities expand, and economies accelerate toward cleaner energy, the demand for copper, iron ore, potash, and high-quality steelmaking coal will continue to rise. Our strategy is straightforward: own and operate large-scale, long-life, low-cost assets in the most attractive commodity basins on Earth.

We believe the energy transition represents the single greatest structural shift in commodity demand since the Industrial Revolution. Electric vehicles, renewable energy grids, battery storage systems, and smart infrastructure all require vast quantities of minerals that BHP produces at scale. Copper alone is forecast to see demand growth of 50% by 2040, driven primarily by EV manufacturing and power grid electrification. Iron ore remains the backbone of global construction, while potash is indispensable for feeding a world population projected to exceed 9.7 billion by 2050.

We are reshaping our portfolio around future-facing commodities — the essential building blocks of a decarbonised, electrified, and food-secure world.

Our approach combines disciplined capital allocation with operational excellence. Every dollar we invest is measured against its ability to generate superior returns while advancing our sustainability commitments. We deploy autonomous haulage, remote operations, advanced data analytics, and machine learning across our mining operations — reducing risk, lowering costs, and minimising our environmental footprint simultaneously. Our technology investments are not peripheral; they are central to how we compete in the 21st century.

Beyond production, we are deeply committed to responsible stewardship of the land and water systems surrounding our operations. Every mine plan incorporates detailed closure and rehabilitation strategies from day one, ensuring that the landscapes we operate in are restored and protected for future generations. We work closely with traditional landowners and Indigenous communities to integrate cultural heritage protections into every phase of development — from exploration through to post-mining land use.

Our Essential Products

Four commodity groups powering the industries, cities, and food systems of tomorrow.

Copper

Copper is indispensable for everyday life and the accelerating transition to a lower-carbon world. This versatile metal is a vital component in renewable energy infrastructure, electric vehicle drivetrains, and energy-efficient building systems. BHP operates some of the world's largest and most productive copper mines.

  • Escondida — the world's largest copper mine (Chile)
  • Pampa Norte operations (Chile)
  • Copper South Australia — Olympic Dam & expansion

Iron Ore

Iron ore is the key ingredient in steel — the most widely used metal on the planet. Steel enables the construction of cities, high-speed rail networks, bridges, and the green infrastructure of tomorrow, including wind turbine towers and solar panel mounting systems. Our Pilbara operations are among the world's most efficient.

  • Western Australia Iron Ore — Pilbara region
  • Samarco joint venture (Brazil)

Potash

Potash is a vital agricultural nutrient that helps improve crop yields, soil health, and food quality at scale. As the global population grows and arable land becomes more scarce, potash ensures farmland is used efficiently and sustainably — supporting food security for billions of people worldwide.

  • Jansen Project — Saskatchewan, Canada (in development)
  • Over C$7.5 billion invested to date

Steelmaking Coal

High-quality metallurgical coal is essential for primary steel production in blast furnaces. BHP focuses exclusively on higher-quality coals that enable more efficient, lower-emission steelmaking — a critical bridge technology until commercial-scale hydrogen steelmaking becomes viable.

  • BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) — Queensland, Australia
  • Premium hard coking coal portfolio
